Lithuania’s first lady visits hostel
The flags of Lithuania and Greece fluttered side by side in the breeze for the official visit to Greece of Lithuanian President Vladas Adamkus and his wife Alma Adamkiene, welcomed at an official reception by Greek President Costis Stephanopoulos. Adamkiene’s official program included, at her own request, a visit to the hostel of the Elpida Association at Goudi, for children receiving treatment at the Bone Marrow Transplant Unit, set up by Elpida, at the Aghia Sophia Children’s Hospital, as well as their parents and relatives. The family atmosphere, the playground and the visiting friends make for a warm atmosphere for the sick children and their families. The work of Marianna Vardinoyianni, UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador, for sick children and the family, have made her not only well known but a source of knowledge and advice. Adamkiene, after being shown around the hostel by Vardinoyianni, spoke of her own philanthropic work and the two agreed to cooperate in this sector.
