A gap that cannot be bridged
Following its successful transfer to the big screen in a film starring Julia Roberts, Clive Owen, Natalie Portman and Jude Law, local audiences will now have the opportunity to watch Patrick Marber’s play «Closer» at the Athens Theater. The production is directed by Giorgos Kimoulis, who also stars alongside Zeta Douka, Nikos Psarras and Dora Chryssikou. «Closer» tells the story of four strangers who are brought together by chance and then break apart due to betrayal. The play portrays the four characters’ controversial quest and their doomed attempts to become closer to one another, both physically and emotionally. The play’s structure is symmetrical, almost musical. The contradiction between its high-quality outline and the characters’ brutal language and behavior holds the key to its dynamic. The play’s two couples have gone through the first idyllic stages of love: The impression of a gap, between men and women’s views on sex and love, that cannot be bridged has already been formed. «Closer» highlights the way that we remember our relationships as a series of special and painful moments. The author himself has described it as the feeling we get when we ask ourselves how something that was once so powerful can then turn into quick glances into the past. Athens Theater, 10 Voukourestiou, tel 210.331.2343. Performances take place Wednesdays to Sundays at 9.15 p.m. with additional shows on Saturdays and Sundays at 6.15 p.m.
