‘Splendor of Heaven’ at Frankfurt’s Ikonen

An exhibition titled Splendor of Heaven opens tomorrow in Frankfurt with displays at two museums – Rite and Faith is the title of the Culture Ministry’s exhibition at the Dom Museum, while Greek icons from the Velimezi Collection and the Benaki Museum are opening at the Ikonen Museum. The exhibition catalog, in English and German, has an early work by Domenikos Theotocopoulos (El Greco) titled Christ’s Passion on its cover. The crowning glory of post-Byzantine icons, it displays the eternal power of the artist and is an appropriate image to mourn the deaths of so many thousands of people crucified in their place of work by brutal terrorism. In the preface to the catalog, Professor Angelos Delivorias, the Benaki Museum’s director, thanks German Ambassador in Athens Karl Heniz Kuhna, the Goethe Institute in Athens Director Horst J. Deinwallner and Greek Ambassador in Germany Dimitris Nezeritis, as well as the president of the Greek Organizing Committee Frankfurt 2000, George Romaios, for organizing the exhibition. President Costis Stephanopoulos has opened this same exhibition four times – in Thessaloniki, Athens, Lisbon andPrague.
