From Metsovo to Athens

Last winter, the Averoff Gallery in Metsovo celebrated two anniversaries: its 20th and the 100th birthday of it founder, Evangelos Averoff, with a significant exhibition titled «The Portrait of a Museum.» A few days ago, this rich and varied exhibition of artworks opened at the Benaki Museum’s annex on Pireos Street. Through these rarely seen works from the 20th and 19th centuries – many of which have never left their home in Metsovo – one can trace the development of Greek art. Also of interest are the supplementary exhibits, which include archival material, digital reproductions, photographs, children’s art, interactive CDs and personal effects from the vast collection of Evangelos Averoff. Modern-day Greek art also has a place in the exhibition, as pieces by contemporary artists had been commissioned especially for the Averoff Gallery’s 20-year anniversary.
