Greek books for Francophones
Promoting Greek books abroad is something the European Translation Center (EKEMEL) takes seriously. On June 3, EKEMEL and the National Book Center held the first of what will be annual events to encourage translation of Greek titles into other languages. This year was the turn of the French language. EKEMEL’s director, Catherine Velissaris, spoke of the need to encourage literary translation in Greece and reinforce the Greek presence in Europe. Translators Jacques Bouchard, Michel Grodent, Gilles Decorvet and Michel Volkovitch mentioned the initial struggle to interest French publishers in Greek books: «We’ve had to fight hundreds of years of prejudice,» said Volkovitch. Their efforts have paid off in recent years, as many new French translations of Greek titles have been published. Directed by Tom Dey, starring Robert DeNiro, Eddie Murphy, Rene Russo. Comedy-adventure in which a detective’s life is turned upside down when he is forced to star in a reality TV show alongside a patrolman.
