A reunion at the Herod Atticus

It is undoubtedly one of the season’s musical highlights: the stage reunion of mezzo-soprano Agnes Baltsa and composer/conductor Stavros Xarchakos, this time – and for the first time – at the Herod Atticus Theater, on September 15. Titled «Songs of My Country,» the concert showcases familiar tunes by Greek composers, all of which have left their mark on the domestic audience’s collective memory by defining an era. Internationally acclaimed Baltsa, a singer who has conquered Milan’s La Scala and appeared in leading theaters around the globe, returns, once again, to her homeland in a concert featuring songs by Vassilis Tsitsanis, Manos Hadjidakis, Mikis Theodorakis and Xarchakos, while the latter will lead the orchestra. The Baltsa-Xarchakos collaboration began in 1980 and was followed by highly successful appearances in numerous countries, including Austria, Germany, Japan and the United States. The collaboration also resulted in an album recorded under the Deutsche Grammophon label, titled « Songs My Country Taught Me.» The album was released again in 2004 with a new title, «From Greece with Love,» which was re-released last year.
