Ethel Kennedy pays Athens a visit

It is probably the legendary Greek summer that makes all the difference to our social life. Embassies hold parties outdoors and VIPS flock in for official visits, charity dinners and other events. Ethel Kennedy, widow of Robert F. Kennedy, was the guest of Vardis and Marianna Vardinoyiannis, who are sponsoring the events held in connection with the book by Kerry Kennedy Cuomo and the photography exhibition at the Athens Concert Hall on the theme «Speak Truth to Power,» her foundation for human rights. Present at the reception for Ethel Kennedy at the Athens Plaza Hotel were ambassadors, deputies and other notables. As UNESCO goodwill ambassador, Marianna Vardinoyianni spoke about Kennedy Cuomo’s work for the Robert Kennedy Foundation. Two leading South Africans are coming to Greece this week. Former president F.W. De Klerk, who will visit with his Greek wife, will be guest of honor at a dinner at the South African ambassador’s residence for the local elite and foreign community. The purpose of the event is to raise money for ELEPAP, the Hellenic Foundation for Disabled Children. Another former South African president, Nelson Mandela, hero of the struggle against apartheid, is also coming to Athens for events held by the Nelson Mandela Foundation. On June 20 the Onassis Foundation is holding a dinner in his honor. Soccer pools organization OPAP was another victim of the State’s privatization plans, tumbling 6.31 percent to 7.72 euros after the government said it will sell more off next month.
