Jose Carreras in Thessaloniki

A very special experience awaits those going to the Gis Theater in Thessaloniki tonight. Jose Carreras, one of the world’s most distinguished tenors, will give a concert as part of the 44th Dimitria Festival which has just started. The concert has been organized by the Panhellenic Women’s Sports Association Kallipateira. The Spanish tenor – who is also scheduled to perform at Athens’s Herod Atticus Theater on September 19 – will present a rich and wide-ranging program, joined by soprano Sabina Puertolas and accompanied by the Thessaloniki State Orchestra under the baton of David Gimenez. Continuing the great tenor tradition which goes back to the early 20th century, Carreras is a highly skilled interpreter of operas, operettas as well as music theater compositions. In Thessaloniki, he will perform Nicola Valente’s «Passione,» extracts from Franz Lehar’s «The Merry Widow,» compositions by Carlos Gardel and numerous other songs from the Spanish and Latin American music tradition. While at the peak of his career, Carreras became ill with leukemia but staged a successful recovery and went on to found the Jose Carreras International Leukemia Foundation. In April this year he signed an agreement with the Catalan authorities regarding the establishment of an international research center to fight the illness, which will bear his name. Tickets can be purchased at Metropolis music stores, at the Aristotelous Square box office and at the Ianos bookstore, with ticket prices ranging from 30 to 50 and 80 euros. Starts at 9.15 p.m.
