Vote for the best residence hall

On an empty plot of land at 34 Marathonos, a small street in the Kerameikos area between Iera Odos and Megalou Alexandrou Street, something new is happening. An exhibition featuring the results of an architectural competition for the design of a private student residence hall is giving visitors the chance to vote for their favorite of the five finalists via SMS. The competition was launched in the summer by the OLIAROS development company and was open to young architects up to 35 years of age. Now all 242 submissions are on display. Just a few days ago, the short list of the five finalists was announced. It includes two proposals from Italy, one from the Netherlands, another from the United States and a proposal by two Portuguese designers who live and work in Athens. The SMS votes will count as an eighth ballot alongside the seven members of the judges’ committee. On January 11, the first prize will be announced, which, according to the organizers, will be granted immediately. The winners will receive 10,000 euros in prize money as well as a fee of up to 30,000 euros for the design project. The exhibition has been extended and will now be on show until October 14.
