On your plate: a movie and a meal

Here’s your chance to enjoy what for some might very well be the perfect evening: a great film followed by a great meal. Dubbed an innovative gastro-cinephile concept whose first edition came along in 2007, «Movies on a Plate,» unfolds in Thessaloniki beginning today and running to October 14. Organized in collaboration with the Thessaloniki International Film Festival, the event brings together films, top restaurants and guest chefs. «Movies on a Plate» is also part of the pre-festival activities leading up to the 50th edition of the Thessaloniki International Film Festival, scheduled to take place from November 13 to 22. Avant-premieres On the cinematic front, «Movies on a Plate» unveils two long feature films in avant-premiere: Jean-Marc Vallee’s 2009 period drama «The Young Victoria» follows the early – and rather turbulent – days of Queen Victoria as well as her relationship with Prince Albert. The film stars Emily Blunt, Rupert Friend, Paul Bettany, Miranda Richardson and Jim Broadbent. Adrienne Shelly’s 2007 comedy drama «Waitress» follows Jenna, a gifted pie-baking waitress leading an unhappy married life. When Jenna discovers she’s pregnant, she embarks on an unlikely affair with her gynecologist. While the film was in production, Shelly was murdered by a man whom the director caught burgling her New York City apartment. While screenings will take place at the city’s Olympion Cinema in central Aristotelous Square, dinner will follow at various top restaurants around town. Linking the two activities, the restaurants are preparing special menus – at reduced prices – inspired by the respective films. The event’s program is as follows: Tonight’s screening of «The Young Victoria» will be followed by dinner at Gioiello (tel 2310.250.200) and Ideal (2310.288.244). On Saturday, «Waitress» will be followed by a meal at Gioiello or Da Vinci (2310.401.040). Sunday’s screening of Wes Anderson’s 2007 «The Darjeeling Limited» comes with dinner at Alfredo’s (2310.491.234) or Horizons (2310.294.000). On Monday Peter Webber’s 2003 «Girl with a Pearl Earring» is accompanied by dinner at Art02 (2310.201.421) or B (2310.869.695). Jean-Jacques Beineix’s cult 1981 movie «Diva,» to be screened on Tuesday, will be followed by dinner at Fred & Ginger (2310.647.400) or Ya Mas (2310.253.097). Last but not least, Woody Allen’s Oscar-winning classic «Annie Hall» will be screened on Wednesday, followed by a party and buffet dinner at Punto.Es (2310.532.503). All screenings begin at 8 p.m. and tickets cost 6 euros. Cine menus, including three- to four-course meals with wine (or other drinks) are set at 25 euros. Dinner reservations should be made directly at the restaurant.
