Celebrating Maria Callas

Passionately dedicated to the memory of Maria Callas, the Athenaeum International Arts Center is offering a concert tribute to the late diva who died 25 years ago. Part of the official calendar of the Athens Festival, the event is scheduled to take place at the Herod Atticus Theater on Monday, Sept. 16 and is sponsored by HSBC bank. «Dies Irae – Sacrae Ariae,» will feature works by Bach, Mozart and Verdi, interpreted by four prominent soloists: soprano Irene Tsirakidou (a winner of the Maria Callas Grand Prix), mezzo-soprano Markella Hadziano, tenor Cezar Gutierrez (the last recipient of the Maria Callas Grand Prix award) and bass Dimitris Kavrakos. The singers will be accompanied by the Symphony Orchestra of the Balkans and the Prague Philharmonic Choir, under the baton of Louli Psychouli, the Athenaeum’s indefatigable director. The Athenaeum International Arts Center’s tribute to Maria Callas will take place at the Herod Atticus Theater, Dionysiou Areopagitou, tel 010.323.2771, 010.323.5582, on September 16, at 8.30 p.m. Ticket purchases can be made at the festival’s central box office which is located within the arcade at 39 Panepistimiou, tel 010.322.1459, Monday-Friday 8.30 a.m. – 4 p.m., Saturday 9 a.m. – 2.30 p.m.
