An echo of 62 years ago and the famous ‘No’

It is 62 years since Greece responded with a resounding «No» to Italy. Churchill, the father of victory, acknowledged the importance of the resistance of a handful of Greeks against the Axis forces, saying: «We say the Greeks fought like heroes. From now on we shall say that heroes fought like Greeks.» Alexandros Alexandrakis, who painted the 1940-41 struggle, did this sketch on his knee during the fighting, where he served as a corporal in the artillery, «as yet more evidence of what we have lived through up here,» as he wrote in Jan. 1968. From his album of drawings and oil paintings, «The War We Fought.»
