The exhibition “Thomas Hope: Drawings of Ottoman Istanbul” opens at the Benaki Museum of Islamic Art in Athens on Thursday, March 24. Hope (1769-1831), the scion of a wealthy British banking family, visited Greece and Turkey in the last quarter of the 18th century. The exhibition features his efforts to portray Ottoman Istanbul through topographic views and folding panoramas as well as scenes from daily life ranging from coffee shops to market places, costumes and palaces. Later on he became a patron of the arts.
