Index just above 1,700 as losses pile up
Late-session selling pushed equities more than 1 percent lower yesterday, but the benchmark general index held above the 1,700-point psychological barrier. The main market index reversed gains early in the day to end down 1.05 percent at 1,703.79 points. It lost more than 4 percent this week. «We had a good start today, moving in line with European bourses, but took heavier losses as Europe went into the red,» said Manos Mavrogenis, analyst at Laiki Attalos Securities. «This is an example of how nervous investors have been lately,» he added. Blue chips fell 1.25 percent, while mid-caps retreated 1.29 percent and small-caps dropped 1.17 percent. Turnover was 81.15 million euros, with 21.06 million shares changing hands. Losers beat winners 222 to 84 with 52 shares unchanged on 358 traded. (Reuters)
