Dinner to cost 7 percent less this Christmas

This year’s Christmas dinner will cost households 7 percent less on average compared with 2009, according to the Development Ministry’s Price Observatory.

The price of turkey has dropped on average by 15 percent this year, leading a host of price reductions for most items deemed essential for this Saturday’s traditional spread.

The Observatory estimates the cost for a six-member family to come to 137.76 euros this year, down from 148.29 euros last Christmas, based on prices recorded annually on December 16.

Indicative prices per kilo stood at 6.30 euros for turkey, 7.60 euros for lamb, 7.16 euros for pork, 6.49 euros for feta cheese, 71 cents for potatoes and 5.09 euros for olive oil.

Prices per 1.5 liters in the drinks category were seen at 3.62 euros for red wine and 1.44 euros for soft drinks.

The drop in the price of Christmas sweets ranges from 7.6 to 16.5 percent, the Observatory noted.
