Most stocks post gains on volatile day

A highly volatile session on the local bourse on Monday saw most stocks end up with gains despite the serious losses some of them had incurred over the course of the day. Small-caps however ended comfortably in positive territory.

The Athens Exchange (ATHEX) general index closed at 1,593.30 points, expanding 0.13 percent from last Friday?s close at 1,591.23 points. At one point during the session it was showing losses of 1.42 percent.

The blue chip FTSE/ATHEX 20 index grew 0.24 percent to end at 740.51 points, while the small-cap FTSE/ATHEX 80 index outperformed with growth of 1.57 percent.

This time the action did not focus so much on banks, as the blue chips with the highest gains were Viohalco (up 6.94 percent), Mytilineos (4.58 percent) and Marfin Investment Group (2.86 percent).

On the losing side were Titan Cement (down 4.22 percent), Ellaktor (2.08 percent) and Coca-Cola HBC (2 percent).

In total, 103 stocks moved up, 69 went down and 50 remained unchanged. Epilektos led the gainers with a 20 percent advance, while Paperpack-Tsoukaridis posted the biggest loss with a decline of 16.05 percent.

Turnover on Monday came to 113.6 million euros.
