Stocks give up 1.88 percent

Greek stocks lost 1.88 percent on Wednesday with sentiment hurt by uncertainty over whether the ruling Socialists can hold on to power and steer the country through the crisis.

The Athens bourse?s benchmark general index ended at 1,243.05 points.

The blue chip FTSE/ATHEX 20 index gave up 2.14 percent to 553.46 points. Banks dipped 3.10 percent.

National Bank tumbled 5.97 percent to 4.57 euros and Eurobank EFG retreated 0.99 percent to 3 euros.

Piraeus Bank slipped 1.96 percent to 1 euro while Alpha Bank bucked the trend, adding 2.52 percent to 3.26 euros.

Marfin Investment Group (MIG) plunged 6.35 percent to 0.59 euros and Hellenic Exchanges, which operates the Athens bourse, ended at 4.62 euros, off 4.35 percent.

Construction companies also showed heavy losses. Ellaktor gave up 5.96 percent to 2.05 euros and peer GEK Terna slumped 8.98 percent to 1.52 euros.

OTE telecom fell 2.44 percent to 6 euros and power utility PPC lost 1.68 percent to 9.34 euros.

Turnover rose to 120.6 million euros versus 79 million in the previous session.
