Telecom Italia and Cyta hook up for project

Cyprus?s largest telecommunications services provider, Cyta, and Telecom Italia have announced they will build the first underwater ring network between the east Mediterranean island and Greece.

The new Athena submarine cable subsystem is scheduled to start commercial operations by the end of the year, Nicosia-based Cyta said on Thursday.

?The agreement for the Athena subsystem fosters a new partnership between Cyta and Telecom Italia that enhances the strategic role of Cyta as a major cable hub in the Eastern Mediterranean,? said Photis Savvides, Cyta?s CEO.

The system will leverage the recently upgraded Minerva underwater telecommunications cable that links Cyprus to Italy via the island of Crete and that is operated by MedNautilus, a unit of Telecom Italia Sparkle, Telecom Italia?s international wholesale and retail business arm.
