Afternoon sales wipe out morning gains

The afternoon sellers outweighed the morning’s buyers in Athens on Wednesday, with the majority of stocks posting moderate losses at the end of trading. It was also the bourse session with the lowest turnover so far this year.

The Athens Exchange (ATHEX) general index closed at 836.58 points, shedding 0.49 percent from Tuesday’s 840.71 points, despite climbing as high as 857 points at one point during the day.

The large-cap FTSE/ATHEX-25 index contracted by 0.84 percent to 280.02 points, while the small-cap index posted a rise of 0.16 percent.

A late surge allowed OPAP and National Bank to register some gains, amounting to 3.97 percent for the gaming company and 3.27 percent for the lender.

Marfin Investment Group declined by 7.59 percent, Intralot fell by 6.32 percent and Viohalco lost 5.34 percent.

In total, 55 stocks posted gains, 71 recorded losses and 22 remained unchanged.

Turnover amounted to just 35.3 million euros, down from Tuesday’s 51.1 million.
