Foreign arrivals jump by 13 percent in Q1

Data compiled by the Hellenic Statistical Authority showed a 13.1 percent increase in foreign tourist arrivals in the first quarter of the year compared with the same period in 2010.

In total, 1,108,387 foreign visitors came to Greece, against 980,411 in the January-March period last year. Arrivals from Europe grew by 8.6 percent and from the European Union by 1.1 percent.

There was a spectacular annual increase from countries such as France (70.5 percent), Russia (79.8 percent) and Turkey (97.8 percent), while arrivals from Britain rose by 32.4 percent and from the US by 16.6 percent.

There was also a decline of 19.5 percent in arrivals from Germany and 15.9 percent in visitors from Cyprus.
