Index contracts on blue chip losses

Losses incurred on Wednesday by many major blue chips led the main index of the Athens bourse to end the session in the red, although rising stocks outnumbered losers by a ratio of two to one.

The Athens Exchange (ATHEX) general index ended at 1,010.76 points, contracting by 0.17 percent from Tuesday?s closing figure of 1,012.52 points. The blue chip FTSE/ATHEX 20 index dropped 0.62 percent to end at 434.04 points. However, the mid-cap index added 1.97 percent and small-caps 1.42 percent.

Bank of Cyprus suffered the biggest losses among blue chips (down 4.96 percent), while Duty Free Shops added 7.90 percent.

In total, 78 stocks moved up, 38 went down and 48 remained unchanged. Turnover came to just 43.7 million euros, against 47.7 million on Tuesday.
