National Bank leads downward spiral

There was no stopping the Greek bourse?s decline on Monday, either, as the local index slid ever lower to levels unseen since late 1996.

The Athens Exchange (ATHEX) general index ended at 940.72 points, contracting by 2.21 percent from last Friday?s closing figure of 961.96 points. The blue chip FTSE/ATHEX 20 index dropped by 2.38 percent to end at 401.15 points.

All but two blue chips headed southward, led by National Bank (down 4.05 percent) and Hellenic Postbank (3.87 percent). Jumbo added 4.72 percent while Public Power Corporation avoided losses gaining 0.16 percent.

In total, 49 stocks moved up, 89 went down and 52 remained unchanged. Turnover came to a particularly low 33 million euros, down from 53 million euros last Friday.
