Bourse index halts downward spiral

The declining trajectory of the Greek bourse paused for some breath on Monday, as the main index was boosted by banks and registered small gains.

The Athens Exchange (ATHEX) general index ended the day at 666.95 points, gaining 0.41 percent from last Friday?s closing figure of 664.24 points.

The blue chip FTSE/ATHEX 20 index added 1.12 percent to close at 260.66 points, but the mid-cap index gave up 0.31 percent.

Piraeus Bank grew 7.04 percent to outperform other blue chips, while Hellenic Postbank climbed 6.27 percent and National Bank expanded 5.49 percent. Public Power Corporation dropped 1.88 percent.

Rising stocks outnumbered the losers by 86 to 77, while 17 remained unchanged. Turnover amounted to 39.2 million euros, up from Friday?s 28.1 million.
