Stocks rise, bucking the trend on foreign bourses

The local stock market registered gains on Wednesday despite the thin trade and the downbeat mood on most European bourses.

The Athens Exchange (ATHEX) general index ended the day at 686.20 points, adding 1.06 percent to Tuesday?s closing figure of 679.01 points. The blue chip FTSE/ATHEX 20 index also grew by 1.06 percent to close at 269.51 points.

Marfin Popular Bank led the blue chips (up 3.67), while Eurobank EFG lost 3.20 percent.

In total, 71 stocks registered gains, 70 posted losses and 29 remained unchanged.

Turnover amounted to 30.5 million euros, against Tuesday?s 30.8 million.

Foreign investors held 49.1 percent of the market value of all stocks listed on the Athens Stock Exchange in November, compared with 50.4 percent in November 2010. In October, foreigners owned 51.4 percent.
