Bill gives authorities quick access to bank accounts as part of tax probes
The Finance Ministry is to submit a bill to Parliament on Monday that would allow it to obtain taxpayers’ bank details at 24 hours’ notice as part of investigations into tax evasion.
The draft law is being put forward due to concerns about delays from banks in responding to requests for customers’ details.
The Financial Crimes Squad (SDOE) has asked for information on 5,000 bank clients but has so far only received data concerning half of them.
The bill would lead to the creation of a central bank registry from where SDOE and other bodies could quickly draw information.
The troika wants authorities to ultimately be able to see information in real time, without having to apply for access.
According to the law, authorities will not have the right to seize taxpayers’ salaries or pensions if they are less than 1,000 euros a month.
