Bank stocks help index stay in positive territory

As bank stocks continue their annual so-called window-dressing efforts to raise prices at the end of the year, the local bourse?s main index managed to recover some losses on Wednesday while turnover increased to more respectable levels.

The Athens Exchange (ATHEX) general index ended the day at 669.57 points, up just 0.01 percent on Tuesday?s closing figure of 669.45 points. The blue chip FTSE/ATHEX 20 index declined by 0.42 percent to close at 258.27 points.

Ellaktor led the blue chips with gains of 2.59 percent, while Marfin Popular Bank dropped 6.55 percent.

In total, 74 stocks registered gains, 85 posted losses and 27 remained unchanged.

Turnover amounted to a 31.4 million euros, up from Tuesday?s 15.1 million.
