Cyprus, Israel may ponder linking power grids

Israel and Cyprus may consider linking their power grids, according to the head of the Cyprus Energy Regulatory Authority.

The review follows a proposal by Israel?s Energy and Water Minister Uzi Landau, Giorgos Shammas, the authority?s president, said in a telephone interview on Thursday.

?So far no decision has been taken,? Shammas said. ??It has to be established first whether such a project is technically possible and financially viable.?

Landau?s spokesman Chen Ben-Lulu confirmed that connecting the two nations? power grids was among the ideas discussed during a recent visit by Landau to Cyprus. Landau accompanied Israel?s President Shimon Peres on a visit to the Eastern Mediterranean island in November.

Linking the Cyprus power grid to another ?could help the system operate more smoothly,? Shammas said. [Bloomberg]
