Bourse wipes out all of Monday’s gains

After nine consecutive sessions of gains and with the debt swap process stalled, the local stock market suffered considerable losses on Tuesday, wiping out all of Monday’s gains and then some.

The Athens Exchange (ATHEX) general index ended the day at 703.44 points, declining by 5.48 percent from Monday’s closing figure of 744.26 points. The blue chip FTSE/ATHEX 20 index contracted by 6.50 percent to close at 275.76 points.

National Bank led the losers among blue chips with a 13.40 percent decline, followed by Piraeus Bank (down 11.25 percent). Viohalco (up 2.61 percent) and Hellenic Petroleum (1.67 percent) bucked the trend.

In total, 63 stocks registered gains, 104 posted losses and 17 remained unchanged.

Turnover amounted to 60.9 million euros, just up on Monday’s 60.4 million.
