Bank stocks grow, but rest of bourse drops

Despite the rise that bank stocks registered on Friday, the local bourse headed down after two days of considerable growth as investors decided to cash in on the week?s gains.

The Athens Exchange (ATHEX) general index ended the day at 745.67 points, contracting by 2.68 percent from Thursday?s closing figure of 766.23 points. The blue chip FTSE/ATHEX 20 index dropped by 1.39 percent to close at 307.62 points.

The banks? sectoral index added 3.40 percent. Bank of Cyprus led blue chips with gains of 13.64, while Piraeus Bank climbed by 11.86 percent. OTE telecom lost 6.49 percent.

In total, 58 stocks registered gains, 102 posted losses and 27 remained unchanged.

Turnover amounted to 119.3 million euros, just up on Thursday?s 118.3 million.
