Banks grow but small caps drop in ATHEX

The Athens bourse was split down the middle on Monday as banks helped the benchmark and blue chip indices to register considerable gains on news of the party leaders’ agreement on the recapitalization of lenders, while non-bank blue chips and the majority of small-caps suffered losses.

The Athens Exchange (ATHEX) general index ended the day at 785 points, adding 3 percent to Friday’s closing level of 762.15 points. The blue chip FTSE/ATHEX 20 index gained 4.79 percent to close at 330.44 points, while small-caps contracted by 2.03 percent.

Alpha Bank outperformed with gains of 19.70 percent, followed by Piraeus Bank (up 17.76 percent) and Hellenic Postbank (15.20 percent). Motor Oil declined by 2.95 percent.

In total, 87 stocks registered gains, 78 posted losses and 12 remained unchanged.

Turnover amounted to 75.2 million euros, up on Friday’s 71.6 million.
