Small- and mid-caps buoy local bourse

The healthy growth of small- and mid-caps more than offset the losses suffered by banks during Wednesday?s bourse session, allowing the benchmark index to continue its rise.

The Athens Exchange (ATHEX) general index ended the day at 809.12 points, adding 0.86 percent to Tuesday?s closing level of 802.21 points. The blue chip FTSE/ATHEX 20 index gained 0.21 percent to close at 341.66 points. The mid-cap index added 2.32 percent and small-caps rose 2.27 percent.

Piraeus Bank lost 7.55 percent and Alpha declined by 4.07, but Public Power Corporation added 7.07 percent. The bank sector index contracted by 1.42 percent.

In total, 106 stocks registered gains, 66 posted losses and 22 remained unchanged.

Turnover amounted to 111.7 million euros, up on Tuesday?s 87.8 million.
