European jitters pile pressure on bank-wary bourse

French and Dutch government worries across Europe forced more losses on Monday on the Greek bourse, which also factored in the aftermath of the main commercial banks? 28-billion-euro losses announced last Friday.

The Athens Exchange (ATHEX) general index ended the day at 702.17 points, shedding 1.73 percent from last Friday?s closing level of 714.51 points. The blue chip FTSE/ATHEX 20 index contracted by 2.15 percent to close at 269.75 points.

Outperforming other blue chips were Alpha Bank (up 2.80 percent) and Eurobank EFG (2.72 percent), while OTE telecom lost 7.53 percent and Duty Free Shops shrank by 7.45 percent.

In total, 34 stocks registered gains, 87 posted losses and 19 remained unchanged.

Turnover amounted to 24.1 million euros, down from Friday?s 29.6 million.
