Small gains for blue chips ahead of elections

The last bourse session before Sunday?s election provided some gains for blue chips on Friday, but the main index remained below the 700-point mark for an eighth consecutive day.

The Athens Exchange (ATHEX) general index ended the day at 689.86 points, adding 0.37 percent to Thursday?s closing figure of 687.30 points. The blue chip FTSE/ATHEX 20 index gained 0.64 percent to end at 263.57 points, but mid-caps gave up 0.31 percent. The main index declined by 0.85 percent on a weekly basis.

Eurobank EFG soared by 12.39 percent to lead the blue chips, ahead of Hellenic Postbank (up 7.14 percent) and Alpha Bank (4.63 percent). Bank of Cyprus was the worst off with losses of 2.70 percent.

In total, 71 stocks registered gains, 50 posted losses and 26 remained unchanged.

Turnover amounted to 29.1 million euros, up from Thursday?s 22.2 million.
