Stock index drops to lows unseen since 1992

As political squabbling continues to rock the country?s economy, the main index of the local bourse dipped on Tuesday to lows unseen in the last two decades, with banks once again leading the way south.

The Athens Exchange (ATHEX) general index ended the day at 620.54 points, shedding 3.62 percent from Monday?s closing figure of 643.87 points. The blue chip FTSE/ATHEX 20 index fell by 4.44 percent to close at 231.83 points. Alpha Bank gave up 14.29 percent, but Hellenic Postbank added 1.91 percent.

In total, 41 stocks recorded gains, 101 posted losses and 15 remained unchanged.

Turnover amounted to 41.7 million euros, down from Monday?s 45.8 million.

The share of foreign investors in the bourse grew to 52 percent in April, while locals accounted for just 46.9 percent.
