Politics causes drop in bookings

New bookings for Greek hotels in the first few days after the elections showed a sudden drop of 50 percent, while foreign tourists have started wondering again whether Greece will revert to the drachma, according to the head of the Association of Hellenic Tourism Enterprises (SETE).

Andreas Andreadis said that before the elections the drop in bookings was around the 13 percent mark compared to last year, although it appeared that this figure might eventually settle below 10 percent. ?Now the trend has been reversed, and the level of the drop will depend exclusively on developments on the political front,? the SETE president stated.

?The tourism industry is expecting political leaders to rise to the occasion with realism and without extreme positions, and do what is self-evident for the country?s sake,? he added.

SETE has invited German journalists to Greece for them to take a close look at the state of the country as a destination, to be followed by British journalists next week.
