Stocks index records new 22-year low

The main index of the Greek bourse slumped to depths unseen since January 1990 on Wednesday, despite gains registered by a number of banks and several small-caps.

The Athens Exchange (ATHEX) general index ended the day at 526.39 points, declining by 1.79 percent from Tuesday?s closing figure of 535.96 points. The blue chip FTSE/ATHEX 20 index gave up 2.16 percent to close at 195.46 points. The small-cap index added 0.51 percent.

Alpha Bank outperformed with gains of 6.06 percent, but Cyprus Popular Bank contracted by 11.82 percent.

In total, 39 stocks headed north, 77 went down and 21 remained unchanged.

Turnover amounted to 30.5 million euros, against Tuesday?s 42.2 million.
