More than 500,000 Greeks must pay nearly 1,500 euros extra in income tax

Almost 600,000 Greeks will have to pay about 1,500 euros more in income tax, according to the first batch of end-of-year statements sent out by the government.

The Finance Ministry has sent notices to 900,000 taxpayers, of whom 224,000 will have to pay no extra tax at all.

About 80,000 Greeks will receive a total of 46 million euros after having paid too much income tax in 2011.

However, 560,000 taxpayers have been notified that they will have to cough up an extra 866 million euros, which works out at 1,453 euros per person.
