Athens International Airport passenger numbers fall

Passenger traffic at Athens International Airport SA dropped 16 percent as Greece?s inconclusive May 6 election fanned concern the country would be forced to leave the euro area. The number of people passing through the country?s biggest airport declined to 1.1 million from 1.3 million in May 2011, according to a statement posted on the airport?s website.

International passenger traffic fell 18 percent to 727,792 and domestic travelers dropped 12 percent to 395,398. The May downturn showed ?the severe effect of the volatility of the political situation in the country,? according to the statement.

In the five months through May 31, the number of people passing through the airport fell to 4.6 million from 5.2 million in the same period of 2011, according to a statement posted on the airport?s website.

Domestic travelers dropped 7.5 percent to 1.7 million and international passenger traffic fell 14 percent to 2.9 million, the company said.
