Rise in containers passing through Piraeus Port’s Pier 1

Piraeus Port Authority SA, the operator of Greece?s biggest port, said on Monday the number of containers handled at Pier I rose 55 percent over the first five months.

The pier handled 293,874 twenty-foot-equivalent units, or TEUs, through May 31, up from 189,706 in the same period in 2011, according to an e-mailed statement from the Piraeus-based company.

?The port?s car terminal and cruise operations also marked an upward trend,? Chief Executive Officer Giorgos Anomeritis said in the statement.
