Bourse chalks up major gains on EU decision

Banks led the local stock market to impressive gains on Friday following the announcement of the European Council?s decision to shore up the eurozone?s banking sector.

The Athens Exchange (ATHEX) general index ended at 611.16 points, adding 5.68 percent to Thursday?s closing figure of 578.31 points. On a monthly basis it climbed 16.3 percent. The blue chip FTSE/ATHEX 20 index gained 7.40 percent to close at 227.14 points.

The bank stock index expanded 12.73 percent, posting total gains of 30.37 percent for June. Eurobank EFG grew 15.85 percent and Alpha Bank climbed 14.55 percent.

In total, 99 stocks posted gains, 36 recorded losses and 21 remained unchanged.

Turnover amounted to 51.9 million euros, almost twice Thursday?s 26.5 million.
