PPC, OTE emancipate bourse from grip of banks

After a long time, the focus on the Athens bourse finally moved away from banks on Monday, as despite the losses posted by the majority of lenders? stocks, the main indices started the week with gains.

The Athens Exchange (ATHEX) general index ended at 642.62 points, adding 0.59 percent to Friday?s closing figure of 638.86 points. The blue chip FTSE/ATHEX 20 index expanded by 0.83 percent to close at 234.29 points.

Public Power Corporation led with gains of 6.85 percent, followed by OTE telecom (up 6.09 percent).

Viohalco declined by 3.54 percent and Eurobank EFG contracted by 2.10 percent.

In total, 61 stocks headed north, 71 recorded losses and 31 remained unchanged.

Turnover remained slim, as is usual at this time of year, amounting to 24.8 million euros, up from Friday?s 23.8 million.
