Halyvourgia plant set to shut
The management of steel company Halyvourgia Ellados appears unable to wait any longer for a solution to the demands of striking employees and for the Aspropyrgos plant to return to operation.
Kathimerini understands that by Friday afternoon at the latest, the owners of the firm will issue an order filing for staff redundancies and for a suspension in operations at the plant in western Attica which has been closed since last November.
This effectively means the sacking of another 240 employees from the Aspropyrgos plant and loss of income for about 500 trading partners and suppliers of the factory from the neighboring area and the broader Attica region.
Contacts this week between the firm?s management and Labor Minister Yiannis Vroutsis appear to have come to nothing, as the proposals by the employee union have not been accepted by the company. The union has been demanding the reinstatement of the dismissed employees, while the management has been asking for an end to industrial action before agreeing to any talks.
