Rumor-mill has investors? eyes on credit sector

The negative mood in bourses around the world took its toll on the Greek stock market on Tuesday, while the rumor-mill regarding the consolidation process in the local banking sector was occupied with Alpha Bank?s interest in Emporiki.

The Athens Exchange (ATHEX) general index ended at 598.68 points, shedding just 0.13 percent to Monday?s closing figure of 599.48 points.

The blue chip FTSE/ATHEX 20 index lost 0.21 percent to close at 216.66 points, but the mid-cap index contracted by 3.28 percent.

Most banks moved up, led by Eurobank EFG (up 6.64 percent), while Marfin Investment Group lost 9.45 percent.

In total, 46 stocks posted gains, 75 registered losses and 23 remained unchanged.

Turnover amounted to 30.6 million euros, up from Monday?s 24.6 million.
