Nervous bourse sees index unable to clear 600 points

The benchmark index of the Greek bourse remained below the 600-point level on Wednesday although most stocks posted gains led by Alpha Bank?s rise, as the market nervously anticipated the outcome of talks for budget cuts worth 11.5 billion euros for 2013 and 2014.

Alpha?s 4.13-percent growth was second only to Marfin Investment Group?s rise of 4.40 percent among blue chips, while Bank of Cyprus declined by 4.09 percent.

In total, 67 stocks posted gains, 55 registered losses and 25 remained unchanged.

Turnover amounted to 24.6 million euros, down from Tuesday?s 30.6 million.
