Two million cars remain uninsured
Car owners who have not insured their vehicles, as required by law, can expect to receive notice from the General Secretariat of Information Systems asking them to produce an insurance contract or pay 250 euros and have their car insured. Cross-checking has revealed that about 2 million vehicle owners have no insurance.
If they do not comply with the Finance Ministry agency?s notice, their data will then be forwarded to the police for penalties as laid out in the law, with prison terms ranging from two to 12 years.
Transport Ministry and insurers data appear to agree that out of the 7 million vehicles on the country?s road, no more than 5 million have been insured.
While a number of vehicles do not require insurance, such as state and diplomatic cars, police vehicles etc, their exact number is not known.
