Credit sector news boosts bourse?s main index

Alpha Bank stole the show during Monday’s session at the local bourse, as the lender that won the bidding for the purchase of Emporiki Bank from Credit Agricole added 6.63 percent and accounted for no less than 34 percent of the day’s turnover.

The Athens Exchange (ATHEX) general index ended at 744.42 points, adding 0.72 percent to Friday?s 739.12 points. The blue chip FTSE/ATHEX 20 index expanded by 0.73 percent, to close at 269.85 points.

Besides Alpha, Piraeus Bank registered significant gains, ending the day up 4.49 percent, while Bank of Cyprus dropped 5.19 percent and Eurobank, which missed out on Emporiki, gave up 4.72 percent.

In total, 63 stocks secured gains, 65 registered losses and 24 remained unchanged.

Turnover came to 43.8 million euros, up from last Friday?s 36.1 million.
