Banks help benchmark index register gains

Banks led the way at the beginning of the week on the local bourse, with their sectoral index adding 5.26 percent, while the main index and turnover started growing in the latter half of Monday?s session. However there were more losers than gainers at the end of trade.

The Athens Exchange (ATHEX) general index ended at 834.99 points, climbing by 1.23 percent from last Friday?s 824.86 points. The blue chip FTSE/ATHEX 20 index expanded by 1.86 percent to close at 306.09 points, although the mid-cap index contracted by 0.46 percent.

Piraeus Bank outperformed with gains of 6.79 percent, while Eurobank Ergasias grew by 5.98 percent and Alpha Bank added 5.95 percent. Titan cement gave up 4.84 percent.

In total, 60 stocks went up, 75 declined and 21 remained unchanged.

Turnover amounted to 57.1 million euros, just up on Friday?s 56.6 million.
