Week ends with more gains for bourse

The euphoric first week of the year ended with significant gains, aided by the reports about the submission of four bids for the healthy side of Hellenic Postbank on Friday.

The Athens Exchange (ATHEX) general index closed at 964.19 points, adding 1.25 percent to Thursday’s 952.30 points. The market’s large-cap FTSE/ATHEX-25 grew by 1.93 percent to end at 332.08 points.

On a weekly basis the main index added 6.97 percent as it posted gains in all four sessions of the week.

All banks posted gains upon news of a likely success in the next step of the sector’s consolidation process, with Attica Bank, one of the four suitors for Hellenic Postbank, adding as much as 20 percent.

The blue chip with the biggest rise was Piraeus Bank, growing by 12.03 percent.

In total 114 stocks recorded gains, 63 posted losses and 26 remained unchanged.

Turnover amounted to 65.3 million euros, up from Thursday’s 50.5 million.
