PPC set to start raising electricity charges by 11pct this week

The Public Power Corporation (PPC) is expected to announce this week rate rises of up to 11 percent for customers.

The increase in the cost of electricity is expected to be introduced in three phases, in January, May and July.

PPC had initially requested permission to increase bills by up to 25 percent but this was rejected by the government.

Instead, the power company is expected to settle for an increase of 10 to 11 percent.

However, PPC is also due to increase the number of customers that have access to its cheapest rate, reserved for poor families.
