Sales begin on Tuesday as store owners hope to make up for poor Christmas

The official retails sales period for January begin on Tuesday in Greece, with store owners hoping to boost their revenues after a poor showing during Christmas.

Initial estimates put retail turnover for the festive period down by up to 30 percent on the previous years.

The signs for retailers from recent sales periods are not encouraging either. Last year, turnover during the January sales dipped by about 17 percent compared to 2011 as it fell below 5 billion euros.

The sales period will last until February 28.
